Short video of an abandoned ghost town neighborhood near the Moraine trail. It’s not really accessible from the trail, some bushwhacking is needed unless you walk in from the road and go through the gate. Thats where you’ll find the sign describing the neighborhood as a project from the Narragansett tribe for housing single parent families and the elderly.
The project apparently came to a halt in the 90’s after the intervention of the Charlestown city council. They decried the project as a low-key attempt from the tribe to sneak a casino into the town. Charlestown is known for keeping large projects out of the town, like not allowing a train track to run through, or any of the many large projects proposed for Ninigret park. This stance on preserving open land has kept Charlestown a beautiful and rural beach town, but it seems to have caused some contention here with the tribe, leading to this ghost town.
