I must have taken the Canal trail for granted while growing up because I was in my forties the first time I rode the entire trail on a bicycle. It was a beautiful ride, I started at the sandwich side recreational park and headed south toward the train bridge. There’s a surprising amount of elevation for a trail that runs directly next to a canal for seven miles. I swear I’ve run and walked along both sides for several miles but never gone the distance. And even though Sandwich is named for the Earl of Sandwich, I think, coincidentally there’s a good number of sandwich shops near the canal recreation area. You can get a scenic workout in and then get a great meal, or pick something up and sit at one of the many picnic tables there. As long as the wind isn’t too strong you won’t lose the whole meal.

Naukabout brewing Co.
Although it’s in the next town, Mashpee, Naukabout is where I ended up going after getting my cycle on at the canal. I was sweaty and needed the dip in Wakeby lake before changing clothes and getting a few good craft beers. It’s a very cool brewery but I’m noticing a trend in New England where the breweries typically only stay open until nine PM at the latest. I don’t know if this has something to do with particular state or local laws, but I’d certainly like to stay a little later sometimes. Regardless it was a good time, there was no food truck there that night so I had to go to another place for pizza afterward. Still totally worth it.
