Peak Bagging
Except for the landfill in Johnston, you won’t find a higher elevation in the state of Rhode Island than Jerimoth Hill. Pack your crampons, because this 812 foot peak is nothing to underestimate.
Located at 222 Hartford Pike in Foster RI, Jerimoth Hill is the tallest point in the state, but It’s more about bragging rights than anything else. from the parking area the trail goes only three tenths of a mile and gains maybe seven feet of elevation until you reach the top. Currently the trail is on state property but I understand that you used to have to trespass on private property to access the summit.
Just for Fun
I did this trail because I was already in the area and I hadn’t actually been here yet. It seems silly to want to take this walk when the White mountains of New Hampshire and the Berkshires are so close. But as a hiker I know that even the shortest, most uneventful trails can have special meaning. Anawon rock in Rehoboth MA and Yantic Falls in CT come to mind. For me the meaning of this is the first stop in reaching the highest points in all the New England states, and eventually beyond.
See you on the trail.
